St Patrick’s Day was an opportunity for the residents, staff and visitors to celebrate, have fun and laugh out loud.
The celebrations were held over two days – Monday, March 17 and the bowls and fly swat tennis on Wednesday, March 19.
Residents and staff alike were dressed in their green attire and the lunch tables and room were decorated with shamrocks and Irish blessings.
A special treat at lunch was the green jelly cups, but the laugh out loud moment was when they played Indoor bowls with potatoes as bowls.
Lesson for the day, “potatoes have a mind of their own”.
Some went very close to the ‘jack’ aka turnip but others were almost out the door.
Potatoes were of various sizes and shapes which made it very hard to get the bias right.
It was easier for diversional therapist Lynda Furner to say to the residents, aim for Noreen’s ankles.
I was standing behind the turnip taking photos and retrieving unruly potatoes.
Residents, nursing staff, hospitality staff and visitors to the facility all were offered a turn when they came into the activity room.
Ron Boxsell had been away visiting family.
He called into the MPS to visit his wife May and said: “I could hear the laughter as I came in the front door and all the way down the corridor. It was so good to hear.”
May had her turn to show Ron and daughter Sandra Hruza how to do it and hit the jack.
That in turn produced ear-splitting cheering.
Ron and Sandra had a turn with varying results which lead Ron to say, “it’s not as easy as it looks, is it?”
