Just weeks after a victorious debut in the professional boxing scene, Aussie Olympian Shannan Davey has made a return to the amateurs to once again represent the nation on the world stage.
The 25-year-old travelled to Brazil last month where he and more than 130 boxers from 19 countries took part in the first World Boxing Cup of the year. He was one of six Australians that competed at the event and he lined up in the men’s 70kg division.
The Narrabri boy was dealt a tough opening bout against US boxer Carlos Flowers and it was the American who prevailed by decision after the bout went the distance at the Rafain Palace Hotel and Convention.
It was fought across three rounds that were three minutes in length.
Flowers then went on to prevail in his quarter-final against Panama’s Eduardo Beckford to earn a semi-final bout against England’s Odel Kamara, which he lost but managed to secure the tournament’s bronze medal.
Davey told The Courier that he was proud of his efforts in a solid fight and was enjoying representing the nation once again.
“I fought hard but just didn’t turn it on in time, but that’s the game,” he said.
“It was amazing to be back fighting for my country as an amateur. There’s no better feeling.”
Prior to the first Boxing World Cup of the year, Davey took part in a week-long multi-nation international camp alongside some of the world’s best amateur boxers.
He has since departed Brazil and is currently in Finland, where he will be competing at the 42nd international GeeBee Boxing Tournament, which will run from April 10-14 at Helsinki Sports Hall.
He is then likely to travel to Belgium for another training camp and then to Venezuela for another tournament.
