The Narrabri Parkinson’s Support Group gathered in Post Office Square on World Parkinson’s Day Thursday, April 10 to raise awareness for a cause that is close to the hearts of many members in the community.

World Parkinson’s Day is a time for Australians to come together, raise awareness, and advocate for better support for people living with Parkinson’s.

Parkinson’s is more common than many people realise, affecting more than 200,000 Australians and over 10 million people worldwide.

Yet, despite its prevalence, it remains widely misunderstood.

It’s often mistaken for just a tremor, when in reality, it is a complex neurological condition that affects movement, mood, cognition, and overall quality of life.

The Narrabri Parkinson’s Support Group have always been strong advocates for sparking the conversation of these effects and sticking by the side of locals who live with this condition or know of somebody who does.

It is so important to have gatherings like this one in rural areas like Narrabri, where there is not as much healthcare and supportive technology available compared to the cities.

The Rotary Club of Narrabri kindly provided the official barbecue, and there were also cakes, baked goodies, tea and coffee, along with the Mother’s Day raffle tickets being sold.

President of the Narrabri Parkinson’s Support Group, Tricia Hadley OAM was very proud of the gathering and the care shown from community members and local businesses.

“We are very grateful towards Whitehaven Coal for their support in our group and happy to have Darren Swain from Whitehaven join us here today,” Tricia said.

“We also have support from Carer Gateway with Nik Stafford here today as the representative. A big thank you to this wonderful organisation.”
