Boggabri Kangaroos have claimed the outright lead at the top of Group 4 Rugby League’s reserve grade table after finishing the weekend as the only team to have won both of their fixtures so far.

The Kangaroos had impressed in their season opener on home soil 15 days earlier when they defeated North Tamworth 24-18 in what was officially a round three game, and they shifted several gears in Sunday’s round one encounter against Wee Waa at Cook Oval.

A dominant display saw Boggabri get up 68-12 after outscoring the home side 12 tries to two and 10 goals to two.

Halfback Josh Trindall finished the game with 32 points as he produced a standout performance against a club he once played for with three tries and 10 goals.

Hooker Bailey Toomey also scored a hat-trick for the Kangaroos, while Kyle Capper and Josefa Kinity both bagged doubles and Ben Haire and Jordan Bush claimed a try each.

The club’s first grade coach Shane Rampling said he was thrilled with the Kangaroos’ start to the reserve grade competition, and declared that there were plenty of reserve grade players who have put the first graders on notice already.

“It was a really good win for reserve grade,” Rampling said.

“They are pushing the first graders. There are multiple players in that side that could easily play first grade, so it keeps our boys on their toes. A bit of in-house competition is great.

“We’ve got really good depth this year. It’s the strongest depth we’ve had since I’ve been at the club.”

The Kangaroos were the only side to climb to four points after two rounds as fellow round three winners Werris Creek and Moree had a 26-all draw against each other at Boughton Oval, and Wee Waa were the other side to have won their opening game.

The other round one reserve grade games saw Dungowan defeat North Tamworth Bears 40-20 at Dungowan Recreation Ground and Gunnedah beat the Kootingal-Moonbi Roosters 22-6 at Kootingal Sports Ground.

The other two games at Cook Oval were split, with Boggabri winning in first grade and Wee Waa taking out the ladies’ league tag match.
