It was a morning of balloon animals and discussing the digital world at the official opening of axxis last Saturday, May 3.
The community gathered inside the axxis store at 147 Maitland St for the celebration as well as the opportunity to meet special guest; Australia’s favourite science communicator, Dr Karl.
Owner of axxis and MC for the day, Mathew Dickerson kicked off the event by welcoming the speakers to the front. First acknowledging their Telstra partner, Mathew invited national channel manager for Telstra, Graham Phypers up to express his gratitude.
“Axxis are a long-standing partner and one of our best partners in the channel, being a constant support for the business,” Graham said.
“We trusted fully in Mathew to come along and take over the store to serve the Narrabri community.
“The axxis team do an awesome job and hopefully you will all support Mat in this new adventure.”
Mathew then welcomed up one of axxis’ own, Xander Peters, to discuss what axxis stands for and the kind of service the Narrabri community should expect from the team.
“We try to put the customer at the centre of everything that we do. Because without everybody in small business, and the community of Narrabri, we wouldn’t have anybody coming through the doors.
“The reason we are here is to serve you,” Xander said.

Cr Darrell Tiemens, founder and owner of Axxis, Mathew Dickerson, Member for Barwon, Roy Butler holding the book ‘A Periodic Tale’, with its author Dr Karl sitting in front.
Narrabri Shire Council mayor Darrell Tiemens attended the event along with the Member for Barwon Roy Butler, both honoured to cut the ribbon for the ceremony.
“I really appreciate Mat for choosing Narrabri Shire as his next step for the business and whatever we can do to support this business we are happy to,” Cr Tiemens said.
“How exciting it is to have Dr Karl here today! I mean who is not a fan of Dr Karl? For years I’ve been listening to your segment on Triple J as I’m sure a lot of people here can agree with.
“Incredible for bringing science and technology to everyday people like you and me.
“It is amazing that you are helping empower our local people to be digitally connected.
“I also acknowledge Roy Butler. Thank you very much for your support in businesses around this area.
“It gives me great pleasure to be here and thank you again Mat with your support for the local shire.”
Mr Butler also addressed the gathering at the official unveiling.
“I know Mat here is at the forefront of technology. He’s always ahead of the curb, which is important at the moment,” Mr Butler said.
“What we’re seeing with mobile phones is that in the next couple of years, we are going to be transitioning under a USO (Universal Service Obligation) at federal level.
“The purpose of this is to lower the orbit satellites, which is the same technology as the Elon Musk incorporation, Starlink.
“It is going to become part of our network that we use. Which means as long as you can see the sky in regional NSW, you will be able to make a phone call.
“This is great for safety and means we cannot have this eternal argument about building new mobile phone towers because we simply will not need as many in the future.
“I’m very happy to see this investment and it is great to see mayor Darrell Tiemens here today as well. I know he’s just as happy as I am about having a service like this in Narrabri.
“I also agree totally with what Xander said, having been in Dubbo store, it is very much like a Telstra shop but certainly a big focus on the customers as you’d expect in a private business.
“So, thank you everyone for coming and I look forward to seeing what comes next.”
Finally, after speeches, the man of the hour was invited to the front to begin the Q&A portion with the crowd. Dr Karl gave the audience the opportunity to ask questions, except this time, face-to-face!
From discussing the reasons for airplane mode to pondering why we hiccup; it was a wonderful, brain-ticking time for all.
Last Saturday was a very successful event for axxis and their Telstra partner, as they were officially welcomed into town. The Narrabri community are looking forward to supporting such a customer-driven business for the future of digital connectivity.
