Narrabri Shire Council’s biosecurity co-ordinator, Clare Felton-Taylor, and biosecurity officer Aaron Cross were guest speakers at the April meeting of Narrabri Garden Club.

Clare and Aaron spoke about the wide range of invasive cacti that have potential to do immense damage to property and livestock if left uncontrolled.

They brought along many samples and photos of different cacti, and advised that everyone has a general duty to ensure identification and eradication of these biosecurity threats.

The best course of action is to contact council who will arrange disposal.

They supplied members with packets of mixed native flower seeds, so get planting members, we look forward to seeing some in our bloom competition in the spring.

Judy Haire was the winner of the bloom competition this month with a beautiful dahlia.

Annette Noy took second place with a rose.

Some members attended the Garden Clubs of Australia zone Picnic Day on Saturday, April 12, hosted this year by the Quirindi and District Garden Club.

An attendance of more than 100 members from across the North West Zone were entertained by some very interesting guest speakers, then enjoyed lunch before visiting five beautiful town and country gardens.

One such garden had our little car labouring up the hill toward the lookout, where we were rewarded by the most magnificent views across the countryside.

All in all, a delightful day.

The club is hoping to organise a bus trip to the Walcha Garden Festival in early November.

A highlight will be a tour of five beautiful private gardens.

It is always a pleasure to visit cooler climate gardens.

It is not exclusive to members, so if you think you may be interested, please let us know as it will depend on getting the numbers to make it viable.

Thank you to the Garden Club members who assisted in the horticultural pavilion at the Narrabri Show last weekend.

The club was thrilled to have Kim Baillie, a national judge and international floral art competitor judge our floral art section this year.

Quite a few members won prizes, with the champion arrangement being created by our president, Ronald Hardy. Congratulations Ronald.

Our May meeting will be held next Wednesday, May 14, when we will visit an incredible cactus garden at 177 Boundary Street, Narrabri.

Please bring along your chair and a mug for a cuppa. Also, don’t forget your bloom.
