On Monday, March 31 the Year 11 Advanced English class boarded the train, in the guise of a bus, to travel to Sydney.
The object of this exercise in transportational endurance was to attend two presentations at Sydney University.
After a night of virtuous sleep and mental preparation at the Central YHA, the class attended a performance an analysis of Richard III, a compulsory Shakespeare text for the HSC.
This brought to life some of the key themes of this play.
Such as the grasp for power and what some people will do to obtain it.
After a stop for sustenance, we then attended a symposium on The Crucible.
Apart from the fact that the author of this play, Arthur Miller, was once married to Marilyn Monroe, there was little some of us knew about this HSC text.
Two and a half hours later, we had seen many of the key scenes acted out and had so many of the literary devices and themes not only told to us but shown to us. A very valuable experience.
While we spent almost 20 hours in transit for the day, it was an incredibly valuable experience, giving us an insight into why these texts are still studied.
Thanks so much to Miss Coppin who organised such a great trip.
