The fourth round of Group 4 Rugby League’s 2025 campaign saw four first grade teams enter without a loss to their name but only three of them end the weekend that way as the Boggabri Kangaroos lost for the first time since the 2024 decider.

Shane Rampling’s men hosted the Werris Creek Magpies in their first home game of the season and never got going as they suffered a 36-10 loss at Jubilee Oval.

The Magpies were one of the four undefeated teams that had drawn their round three Magic Round game a week earlier, and they started the fourth-round clash in red-hot fashion with three tries in the first 13 minutes.

Boggabri hit back in the 17th minute through Tevita Peceli, whose fifth try of the campaign made the score 14-4, but a converted try on the stroke of half-time saw the Magpies take a 16-point lead into the break.

Werris Creek had piled on two more tries to lead 30-4 on the hour-mark, then Kangaroos winger Josefa Goneduadua gave the hosts life when the competition’s leading try-scorer crossed for his sixth of the season in the 64th minute.

Ash White converted the goal to make it a 20-point ball game but a miracle comeback began to look more unlikely as the clock ticked down.

Darcy Weatherall then registered Werris Creek’s seventh try of the day in the 74th minute and Braydon Allan added the extras to make the final score 36-10.

The other match on Saturday saw the undefeated Gunnedah Bulldogs beat Dungowan Cowboys 54-16 at the Dungowan Recreation Ground, and there were two mercy rule victories on Sunday as

North Tamworth took down Wee Waa Panthers 60-0 while Moree Boars defeated the Kootingal-Moonbi Roosters 62-0.

Those results completed a weekend full of away winners as Boggabri went from first place to fourth on the first grade ladder.

Norths, Gunnedah and Werris Creek are now ranked first to third, respectively, with seven points each.

Boggabri have five points, Moree are fifth with four points, Kootingal-Moonbi are on two, and Dungowan and Wee Waa in seventh and eighth are yet to earn a point.

Defending champions Moree lost their first two matches but can storm into the top four this Sunday if they win the grand final rematch when they host Boggabri at Boughton Oval in round five.

Wee Waa are away at Gunnedah that day, while Saturday’s games will see the Roosters host Dungowan in Kootingal and Norths travel to David Taylor Oval to challenge Werris Creek.
