Three Wee Waa High School students helped guide North West Schools Sports Association to a silver medal finish at the NSW Combined High Schools Sports Association Secondary Girls’ Rugby Union Championships in Singleton last week.
Taylor Horne, Matilda Currey and Georgia Horne travelled to the Hunter region town to compete in the event and the three junior Blue Boars all played crucial roles in their team’s success.
North West finished last out of eight teams in 2024, but the Wee Waa High School Year 12 students and their teammates went to another level this year as they won five of the seven pool games to qualify for Thursday’s grand final.
They challenged Hunter in the big dance, who they had been beaten 39-0 by on Thursday, and went down 24-0 against the undefeated side to end up ranked second out of eight teams.
The matches played across the three days were all contested in the rugby sevens format.
The North West girls kicked off the tournament with a 22-12 win against Riverina last Tuesday before going down by 39 points at the hands of Hunter.
They bounced back to end day one in victorious fashion as they defeated Western 12-7, but their grand final hopes took a hit on day two when they lost 19-7 against Sydney West.
They shrugged that off to win their next two matches as they took down South Coast 17-12 and North Coast 22-10 to enter their seventh and final pool match most likely needing a win to go through to the final.
Third-placed Sydney West won their round seven contest against North Coast to ensure North West’s game was a must-win clash, and they got the job done 12-10 against fourth-placed Sydney North.
That nail-biting victory saw them go through to the decider, in which the undefeated Hunter girls were too good as they scored their third clean sheet and eighth consecutive victory to be crowned champions.
North West also returned home with silver medals from the boys’ rugby union tournament from Singleton.
They lost against Sydney West in a grand final rematch from 2024.
The three Wee Waa girls play their club rugby for Narrabri Junior Blue Boars in the Friday night North West Regional Youth Rugby competition.
They are part of the under-18s team and combined for four of the team’s seven tries across the first two rounds.
They had a bye in round three last Friday and will go in search of their first win of the season when they meet Armidale in Tamworth this week at Plain Street Fields.
Meanwhile, Taylor and Matilda and fellow Wee Waa High School student Ruby Clayton were part of the North West girls’ under-16s and 18s rugby league teams at the recent Greater Western trials.
The three girls were all selected to attend the NSWCHSSA rugby league championships later in the term.
Matilda is also a member of the North West netball team playing at the NSWCHSSA secondary netball state championships this week in Tamworth.
