The first half of the 2025 Group 4 Rugby League campaign will wrap up this weekend and the two Narrabri Shire teams will be battling for crucial first grade wins to enter the second half of the season with momentum on their side.
Wee Waa Panthers are yet to win a game this season following six losses in as many matches. Four of those games ended early due to the 60-point mercy rule, but they showed an improved performance in their most recent match when they hosted Dungowan Cowboys at Cook Oval on Sunday, June 1.
They pushed the visitors all the way to full-time in that match but went down 20-16, a result that has given them plenty of confidence moving forward.
They will need to draw on that this Sunday when they travel to Boughton Oval to challenge defending champs Moree in round seven.
The Boars are on a four-game win streak since dropping their first two games of the year, and they are hoping to make that five when they host Wee Waa on Sunday.
The Panthers are at the bottom of the ladder with no points but they can join Kootingal-Moonbi on two if they can score an upset win, which would also boost their finals hopes as they currently sit seven points outside the top four.
Wee Waa have the bye in the ladies’ league tag competition, and will be going for their second win in reserve grade and their first win in under-18s. If they get the job done in those two grades, they will move off the bottom of the respective ladders.
Boggabri will play their second game in a run of four straight at home when they welcome the Kootingal-Moonbi Roosters to Jubilee Oval on Saturday.
They won the first of those 24-20 in a brilliant comeback on old boys’ day before the June long weekend bye, which snapped a three-game winless run.
They are now focused on making it two on the trot as they look to get themselves back in the top four as they enter the second half of the 2025 campaign.
The Kangaroos are currently on seven points following three wins, a draw and two losses in 2025. They are trailing North Tamworth Bears only on for and against difference, and are trailing third-placed Moree by one point and second-placed Gunnedah by two points.
Werris Creek are two points clear at the top of the table.
In the other grades, Boggabri will be looking to edge close to the top as they sit third, just two points behind league leaders Dungowan, while the club’s ladies’ league tag team will go in search of their first win of the year.
Other fixtures will see Dungowan host Werris Creek on Saturday and Gunnedah travel to North Tamworth on Sunday.
