Narrabri Shire Council has temporarily closed the Wee Waa waste transfer facility due to the illegal dumping of demolition material containing asbestos.

Last week, council advised that the transfer station had closed to the public as a result of the incident.

“We are investigating the contamination issue to identify the extent of the problem,” council said in its update.

“For your safety and in compliance with ongoing investigations, we kindly request that residents refrain from entering the transfer station until further notice. This precaution is essential to avoid any potential hazards.”

In a further update this week, council said a licensed asbestos removalist is scheduled to undertake clean-up activities on Thursday, June 19 and Friday, June 20 (subject to the assessment results).

Council is aiming to reopen the transfer station on Saturday, June 21, pending successful completion of clean-up works.

“In the meantime, we encourage residents to visit council’s website for a full list of what can and can’t be disposed of at our transfer stations,” council’s information read.

Residents are reminded it is illegal to dump asbestos waste. It must go to a landfill licensed to accept it.

People should contact the landfill site before taking asbestos and asbestos containing materials, to check what procedures are in place.

“Always phone ahead to the licensed landfill before you start asbestos removal. They can confirm if they can accept your asbestos waste and contaminated PPE,” information from NSW EPA reads.

NSW EPA strongly recommends using a licensed asbestos removalist to remove and dispose of asbestos waste.
