Work is officially underway on the long-awaited $105 million redevelopment of Moree Hospital, promising state-of-the-art healthcare facilities for the local community.

Government officials joined hospital staff and community members earlier this month to ceremonially turn the first sod, marking the start of main construction works.

The major upgrade will deliver a purpose-built acute services building on the current hospital campus, featuring a new emergency department, operating theatres, medical imaging, birthing and inpatient units, pathology services, and a new main entry.

“It was a privilege to turn the first sod with Moree health staff and community members on this important health project for the region,” said the state government’s spokesperson for Northern Tablelands, Peter Primrose.

“The upgraded health facilities and modern clinical services will provide patients, families, carers, and staff with a modern hospital environment, designed to improve health outcomes for the communities throughout the region.”

The redevelopment, which is being delivered by Hutchinson Builders, will be supported by up to 90 subcontractors at the peak of construction.

Local trades, businesses and suppliers recently had the chance to meet the builder at industry events held in Moree and are encouraged to register their interest in taking part.

Minister for Regional Health Ryan Park welcomed the progress, noting the project’s potential to benefit the local economy.

“I’m pleased to see construction underway for the new acute services building at Moree, which will deliver enhanced facilities for staff, patients and visitors,” Mr Park said.

“The redevelopment will provide a significant boost to the local economy during construction supporting many direct jobs, as well as the potential for supporting indirect jobs.

“The feedback from staff, community and stakeholders throughout the planning and design has ensured the new hospital building creates a welcoming and supportive environment that reflects the heritage and culture of the region.”

To ensure hospital services remain uninterrupted, new traffic arrangements are in place. Vehicle access to the hospital is now via Victoria Terrace, while access to community and mental health services is through Alice Street. Signage has been installed to help guide patients and visitors.

Construction is expected to be completed by 2027. All current hospital services will continue to operate throughout the project.
