A new nbn fixed wireless tower is now live in the Narrabri region and it’s expected to deliver faster and more reliable broadband to 700 homes and businesses.
Last Thursday, nbn representatives and local leaders came together at Egans Lane to celebrate what’s been described as a ‘major step forward for regional connectivity’.
Cutting the ribbon at the tower’s official launch was nbn local executive manager of regional community and stakeholder engagement NSW Tom O’Dea, Member for Barwon Roy Butler, and Narrabri Shire mayor Darrell Tiemens.
“It’s exciting to be in Narrabri today,” O’Dea said.
“Seven hundred homes and businesses in the Narrabri district can now access nbn fixed wireless for the first time.
“Allowing more streaming, more devices at the same time, better access to [the] cloud, better gaming and all the things that modern families need these days.”
The new tower went live in late March, marking the first activation in the Narrabri local government area under the Regional Digital Connectivity Program, delivered and funded in partnership with the NSW government.
The investment is set to boost broadband connectivity, providing a faster and more reliable broadband experience including smoother, higher-resolution video calls, enhanced streaming, faster downloads and the ability to connect more devices.
The Narrabri East tower, along with the accompanying Narrabri repeater site, are the first facilities in the Narrabri Shire to be switched on as part of the program.

Cutting the ribbon at the launch of the new nbn fixed wireless tower were Narrabri Shire mayor Darrell Tiemens, Member for Barwon Roy Butler and nbn local executive manager of regional community and stakeholder engagement NSW Tom O’Dea.
Additional towers at Yarrie Lake and Drildool are scheduled for completion soon.
These new towers will offer residents and businesses around Narrabri the chance to make the most of digital opportunities that support remote work, online learning, telehealth, and economic growth through the nbn fixed wireless network.
NSW Minister for Agriculture, Regional NSW and Western NSW Tara Moriarty said strong digital infrastructure is vital to helping communities like the Narrabri region thrive.
“This investment supports every part of the community, from local businesses to students and families, by delivering the reliable high-speed broadband that makes daily life easier,” she said.
“This investment by the NSW government is about keeping our communities connected and supporting families, jobs and the future of our regions.”
O’Dea said the Narrabri East tower reflects nbn’s commitment to improving connectivity in regional Australia.
“The nbn fixed wireless network is critical infrastructure, delivering faster speeds and more reliable connectivity for regional homes and businesses, even at peak times,” he said.
“Every Australian deserves fast, effective broadband, whether they live in a city or a country town.”
Butler said improved connectivity is a major win for the region.
“Mum and dad can do the internet banking and kids can jump on and do gaming, someone else can jump on a streaming app and watch stuff – it’s all really important,” he said.
“The new tower marks a significant boost, providing more reliable internet, better performance and more service options at city-like prices and speeds.
“Reliable connectivity is essential for regional communities, ensuring people in North West NSW can work, learn and access services, regardless of where they live.”
Cr Tiemens welcomed the investment, highlighting its importance for the region’s growth.
“I think this is really great because if you look around us, within a radius of maybe 10, 20km, you have some of the most productive and rich farm country in all of the nation,” he said.
“You’ve got a lot of businesses running here, not only that – each of these farming businesses also has kids that are at university, you’ve got parents who are working from home – so it’s very, very important being connected.
“Narrabri is the sportiest town in the entire country but that also include e-sport …there’s a lot of gaming taking place around this district.
“Narrabri is a growing regional hub, and better connectivity will open opportunities for local businesses, improve access to essential services and help families stay connected.
“Our community is full of high achievers, and strong digital infrastructure will help us continue to excel.”
