Almost 130 checks at health van’s visit

The Men’s Health Educational Rural Van (MHERV) has visited the North West region and conducted almost 130 health checks.

The van, an initiative of the Rotary Club of Warners Bay and supported by local clubs, was recently located at Narrabri Bunnings and in Conadilly Street, Gunnedah.

This year, the van’s nurse Kath Wyborn, with husband Craig, welcomed community members to spend a few minutes for important health checks.

While in Narrabri, 82 checks (50 men and 32 women) were conducted across two days.

In Gunnedah, 53 checks (40 men and 13 women) were completed.

When visiting the MHERV facility, people receive health tests in just minutes including blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol.

The results are divided into three categories – category one (no concerns but continue regular checks with a GP), category two (issue identified and follow up with a GP within a week) and category three (seek medical advice immediately).

Several people were urged to seek medical advice immediately following their check.

Rotary Club of Narrabri president Julie Herbert said organisers were really pleased with the response, with visits to MHERV increasing on previous years.

“To have 82 people come through over the two days shows there is a real interest in accessible health checks in our region,” she said.

“MHERV provides a simple and convenient way for people to get some important health checks done in just a few minutes.

“It can identify issues that people may not otherwise be aware of and encourage them to follow up with their GP.

“A few minutes spent getting some basic checks can potentially alert you to an issue and give you the opportunity to do something about it.”
