Books back on shelves for Rotary fundraiser

Thousands of books have again been sorted and readied for sale as part of the Rotary Club of Narrabri’s much-loved regular fundraiser.

Doors officially opened to the public from Tuesday morning.

The club typically holds the book sale almost annually to raise money for community projects and donations.

Since its inception many years ago, the initiative has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars enabling Rotary to make considerable contributions locally.

This year, the book sale is being staged in the old Mitre 10 building on Dewhurst Street.

The space has been kindly provided by Rotarian and Narrabri businessman Tim Logan.

Mr Logan had also offered the same location for book storage throughout the year.

Rotary Club of Narrabri president Julie Herbert said the club was excited to see the sale return. The initiative is a popular fixture on the local calendar.

“Every dollar Rotary raises at the book sale goes back into our community to support local not-for-profit organisations, charities, youth programs and projects,” she said.

“We thank the community for continuing to support the sale so strongly and generously.”

Rotary has been buoyed by the community’s continued support, with a lot of new stock on the shelves.

Since the book sale last year, 2MaxFM has served as a drop-off location for donations.

There are books for all ages across a variety of genres, including some special interest items, as well as DVDs.

An extensive array of children’s books features among the items.

Following the recent death of much-loved singer-songwriter Dolly Parton, a prominent advocate for children’s literacy, Rotary is offering one free book for each child in memory of the music icon.

Parton spearheaded the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which provides a free book to children from birth to when they start school.

The same initiative also operates in Australia, with a Narrabri committee working hard for a community-funded program to offer the same service to shire children.

The Rotary book sale has developed from a book section at a garage sale held at the showgrounds to the stand-alone sale in the Narrabri town centre.

Rotary’s book sale will be open from Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm, and on Saturday from 9am to noon.
