NHS Merino challenge

Narrabri High School students have celebrated an outstanding result at the recent NSW Schools Merino Wether Challenge, achieving an impressive four major awards against schools from across the state.

The Narrabri High School team was awarded first place in the Highest Wool Value, Zone 4; first in Highest Carcass Value, Zone 4; Champion Zone 4 and third in the Overall Carcass Value category.

The success is a significant achievement for the school’s agriculture program and reflects the commitment and hard work of the students involved.

Eight students represented Narrabri High School at the competition, where they were required to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of Merino sheep production, including nutrition, growth, wool production and carcass value.

Agriculture teachers Rachel Lilliebridge and Bethany Bray were extremely proud of the students for the effort they put into preparing their wethers for the competition.

“Throughout our involvement in the challenge, students have worked hard to improve the nutrition, growth and overall value of our wethers, while developing a much greater understanding of the decisions that influence both wool and meat production,” said Miss Bray.

The NSW Schools Merino Wether Challenge provides students with a valuable opportunity to apply their classroom learning to a real-world agricultural enterprise.

Students gain practical experience in sheep management while developing an understanding of the balance between producing quality wool and achieving a valuable carcass.

The Narrabri High School agriculture program has now competed in the challenge for four years, with the students continuing to build their knowledge, skills and confidence each year.
