nbn continues fibre upgrade works across Narrabri

Infrastructure works are continuing across Narrabri as nbn prepares eligible homes and businesses for future upgrades to full fibre connectivity.

The work is being carried out across eligible Fibre to the Node (FTTN) premises as part of nbn’s ongoing investment in regional network infrastructure.

Residents may see work crews, vehicles and machinery in local streets while the works are underway.

The project is designed to prepare eligible properties for a future nbn Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) connection, which nbn says will provide faster and more reliable connectivity while helping build a more resilient regional network.

The upgrade to full fibre can provide benefits including smoother and higher-resolution video calls, enhanced streaming, faster downloads and the ability to connect more devices at the same time.

Depending on the property, works may include installing an nbn utility box, known as a Premises Connection Device (PCD), on an outside wall. Underground fibre cabling may also be installed between the street network and individual premises.

Minor excavation, boring, trenching, conduit installation or cable placement may be required as part of the works.

Nbn head of regional engagement NSW Tom O’Dea said the upgrades would help regional communities access improved digital infrastructure.

“nbn’s fibre upgrades are helping communities across the region access the digital infrastructure needed to work from home, access online services and stay connected with family and friends,” he said.

“Fibre is not only our fastest technology, but also our most reliable and future-ready one. As the region continues to grow, fibre upgrades are helping replace legacy copper infrastructure and provide access to a more reliable and resilient nbn network.

“The works underway help us prepare local premises for a future fibre connection, but they do not automatically activate a new fibre service at your address.

“We encourage the community to keep an eye out for details in their letterbox about what is involved, or speak to the nbn team at the Community Kiosk (10am to 2pm) or Narrabri Bunnings (3pm to 5pm) on 16, 17, 23 and 24 September, with additional Bunnings sessions from 8am to 12pm on 17 and 24 September.”

Narrabri Shire Council mayor Darrell Tiemens said reliable connectivity was becoming increasingly important to the community.

“Reliable connectivity is increasingly important for our residents, businesses and visitors, and these upgrades will help ensure Narrabri remains one of the best-connected regional communities in NSW,” he said.

“It’s important that residents and businesses take advantage of these upgrades when they become available, as the long-term benefits of fibre connectivity will far outweigh any temporary inconvenience from the works underway today.”

Residents and businesses can check their current nbn technology and whether their address is eligible for an upgrade to full fibre through nbn’s regional checker at nbnco.com.au/CheckRegional

If digging is required, nbn says affected areas will be remediated on a like-for-like basis after the works are completed.

Residents and businesses can also decline to have the nbn utility box installed or to be included in the current project scope.
