Did you spot the cyclists in town? The Courier and Wee Waa News received calls and messages asking about the cyclists travelling through the region recently.

We tracked them down, and the cyclists were more than happy to share that they were part of the 2026 Ride for the Chopper, raising funds for the vital Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

The eight-day, seven-night mountain bike adventure was all about having fun, reaching goals, discovering new places and supporting an important cause.

The 24th annual ride took the crew through the stunning North West region, from the unique outback landscapes of Lightning Ridge to the agricultural areas around Narrabri, Wee Waa and Boggabri, while also providing opportunities to meet people in welcoming rural communities, before a memorable final night at Lake Keepit.

The group of 49 riders and 11 support crew also made plenty of connections along the way.

They visited Rowena Public School and enjoyed themed ride days.

The group of 49 riders and 11 support crew also made plenty of connections during their trip, stopping in different towns and learning about the local cotton industry along the way.

The crew told The Courier/Wee Waa News that the hospitality and friendliness they experienced along the way was one of the highlights, particularly their visit to Rowena Public School where they had the chance to chat about the importance of the rescue chopper and safety.

“Meeting locals and all the stops along the way, like having lunch in Wee Waa [were highlights],” said one rider, Troy Kernaghan.

Overall, the opportunity to promote and talk about the vital work of WRHS, and the importance of “keeping it free for the public” were key motivators for the riders.
