DARRELL TIEMENS, MAYOR, NARRABRI SHIRE COUNCIL

Recently, I have had the pleasure of attending local events that reflect the generosity and hard work of people across Narrabri Shire.

The Baggy Blues event at the Tourist Hotel, organised by the Narrabri District Cricket Association, brought together well-known cricketers, past and present, to support mental health and encourage discussion, particularly in regional areas. Events like this take considerable planning and effort, and I thank everyone involved for bringing people together.

Last Saturday’s Dolly Parton Imagination Library fundraiser was another wonderful example of locals supporting our community, particularly its youngest members.

Every child in Narrabri Shire, from birth to five years, is eligible to receive a free book each month through the program. The books arrive in the mail, and so many excited children across our shire look forward to that special delivery.

These books are designed to be shared, with parents and grandparents reading aloud and enjoying time with their children and grandchildren. Reading together helps build language and literacy skills, supports children’s learning at school and lays foundations that can benefit them throughout their lives.

Thank you to all the fundraiser’s organisers and supporters. Your efforts help give local children access to books and encourage a love of reading from an early age.

Turning to council business, our October ordinary council meeting was held this week, on Wednesday 21 October. The full agenda is available on council’s website for residents wanting to read more about the reports presented at this month’s meeting.

The agenda included an update on cost improvements and operational efficiencies, the draft Communications, Marketing and Community Engagement Strategy 2026–2029, the draft Procurement Policy, and water projects. It also covered the Narrabri Local Environmental Plan, including outcomes from its public exhibition.

I encourage residents to take an interest in these discussions and the decisions that shape our shire.

There is also good progress on the new Violet Street Bridge, with the bridge deck concrete pour completed last week. Work has included earthworks for the Tibbereena Street approach, stormwater infrastructure and a new water main. Subject to unforeseen delays, practical completion remains on track for November.

Road crews are continuing rehabilitation, heavy patching and resealing on Turrawan Road, with replacement of the traffic island at the Maules Creek Road intersection also planned.

Work has begun on the Bayley Park Creek Causeway as part of the 9.6km Rangari Road upgrade, which includes sealing the road. Please follow traffic controls and take care around these works. I appreciate everyone’s patience while these improvements are delivered.

Families can look forward to Pollinator Day at the Old Baan Baa School Grounds on Tuesday 10 November, from 10.30am. This free morning will explore bees, butterflies, birds, beetles and the other small creatures that help our environment thrive.

Finally, as Christmas approaches, I encourage everyone to shop locally. Prices are often better than elsewhere, and our local businesses offer expertise and support if something goes wrong. Shopping close to home is convenient, and every local purchase helps support jobs in our towns.
