Nominations are open for a $10,000 award recognising outstanding young people from the Narrabri area, with residents encouraged to put forward local achievers for the 2027 Lillian Hulbert Memorial Prize.

Established in 2007 by Thomas Whipp Hulbert in memory of his mother, Lillian Alice Hulbert, the annual prize recognises young people aged 15 to 17 who have excelled in bravery or heroism, academics, sport or charitable work in the Narrabri Shire.

Narrabri Shire mayor Darrell Tiemens said the prize remained one of the region’s most meaningful opportunities to celebrate the achievements of local youth.

“This year our four finalists were all of exceptional calibre, with each young person demonstrating an amazing dedication to making a difference,” Cr Tiemens said.

The 2026 recipient, Elizabeth [Beth] Faris, was recognised for her achievements across multiple fields.

“From representing Narrabri internationally through Rotary Youth Exchange, to excelling in sport at state level, contributing to our Show Society and achieving remarkable academic success – her commitment to community and personal

excellence was truly inspiring,” Cr Tiemens said.

“The Lillian Hulbert Memorial Prize is a powerful way to recognise and celebrate achievements and dedication shown by young people such as Elizabeth, along with the incredible finalists we see each year.

“I encourage residents to consider the young people in Narrabri making a difference in our community and nominate them for this prestigious award.”

To be eligible, nominees must be aged 15, 16 or 17 on 24 February, 2027, and have been born in Narrabri or within a 55km radius of the Narrabri Post Office.

Candidates must also be willing to participate in an interview process in early February, with the winner to be announced and presented

with the award on Wednesday, 24 February, 2027.

The prize money is held in trust until the recipient turns 21, while the award criteria were established by Mr Hulbert and are not determined by Narrabri Shire Council.

Nominations close at 5pm on Monday, 30 November, 2026.
