Earlier this year a team of five junior Narrabri Rural Fire Service representatives participated at the 2019 Australian Fire Cadet Championships.
The biennial event was held on September 30 and ran until October 3 at Wesley Vision Valley, in the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai district.
Aimee Fladrick, Amelia Beer, Bodee Scott, Charli Cassidy, Riley McCleneghan and Alister Wheeler trained over the previous five months, to compete at the championships.
The crew competed in eight timed-events against 23 other teams from across Australia.
The Narrabri crew achieved first place in the team challenge event, and third place in the Light Tanker and Handtool event.
“For us it’s a program to develop the brigade,” said Narrabri RFS brigade captain Greg Cassidy.
“We’ve had 14 kids go through it in total now.
“Six or seven of those have now joined the senior ranks as full brigade members.
“Two of the kids who competed are now in the process of becoming seniors.
“They were involved and helped in the recent Kaputar fires.
“They come out at a level, after all the training, so much further ahead than someone who just does a basic firefighter course.”
The Narrabri juniors finished in ninth place at the end of the weekend.
