Narrabri Shire residents will be able to swim at the Boggabri, Wee Waa and Narrabri swimming pools for free from December 23 through to the end of the summer school holidays in 2020, following a vote at a recent Council meeting.
Councillor Ron Campbell moved the surprise motion at Tuesday’s meeting and it was welcomed and passed unanimously.
“I had a conversation with a gentlemen who was from another town and he said it was quite expensive to take his kids swimming,” said Cr Campbell.
“He said where he came from in Hay it was free.
“Under the circumstances – we can’t swim in the river, it’s not a great cost to Council, a lot of people are not going away on holidays.”
Cr Campbell said that a few visits for a family “starts adding up to a fair bit of dough,” and that’s why he proposed the idea.
The motion that passed means Council will waive all Narrabri Shire swimming pool entry fees from December 23 2019 until the end of the summer School
Holiday period until February 3, 2020 and Council requests the general manager prepare a report on a manner in which to fairly deal with season ticket holders.
Cr Campbell said all season ticket holders will be compensated one way or another by the Shire.
