Narrabri Shire Council is one of the largest employers in the community, with local government providing a diverse and rewarding range of career opportunities.

Narrabri Shire Council supports the training and development of employees through a variety of pathways including Trainee and Apprenticeship programs, tertiary education pathways, licensing and compliance training and professional development courses.

“Council is proactive in its approach to learning and development and provides a variety of training opportunities to ensure our workforce remains highly skilled and able to meet the existing and future needs of the community” general manager, Stewart Todd said.

“Council continues to also support young people and those wishing to learn a new skill through trainee, apprenticeship and tertiary programs across a variety of Council career paths such as procurement, water operations, gardening, IT, building surveying, mechanics, design engineering and town planning to name a few.

“An apprenticeship or traineeship with local government provides a wonderful opportunity for young people to obtain employment in their home town and offers many pathways to pursue any of the many different areas of employment within local government.

Kayla Rush began with Council in 2016 as an IT Trainee and has since successfully completed a certificate III in Information, Digital Media and Technology.

During this time Kayla worked in the IT department learning her role with the support of her manager Sudintha Perera, while studying through TAFE.

“Kayla is currently employed by Council as an Information Services Support Officer and is a very valued member of the Council staff,
receiving the 2019 Customer Focus Corporate Values Award for delivering prompt, courteous and helpful service and being responsive to the community’s changing needs.”

Mr Todd is proud of Kayla’s achievements.

“Kayla is an excellent example of a motivated young person wanting to learn a new skill and establish themselves in a career they can build upon” he said.

“Kayla has been a valuable asset to Council in the IT space, providing excellent service and support in a professional and friendly manner.

“Council is proud of Kayla’s achievements which made her a very worthy recipient of the Customer Focus award in 2019.

“Working in local government, especially in a regional location, can provide a very wide range of career opportunities and I encourage anyone interested in establishing a career in local government as a trainee or even as a career change, to explore the many different employment opportunities the Shire Council offers.”
