Narrabri Shire Council has adopted amended designs for new entry signs at towns and villages.
Earlier this year, the council released interim designs for signs to be located at Baan Baa, Bellata, Boggabri, Edgeroi, Gwabegar, Maules Creek, Narrabri, Pilliga and Wee Waa for public consultation.
Many community submissions were received, particularly encouraging the use of different colours.
Shire general manager Eloise Chaplain described the engagement with the community as informative and said the colour change on the earlier concept was outstandingly different.
“There have been some tweaks to the images to more represent what it was for the community,” Ms Chaplain told last week’s council meeting.
Narrabri’s imagery for the sign has been amended to Sawn Rocks while the actual Bellata silos will feature on the village’s sign.
Some of the submissions received had also voiced concern with the yowie being used for Pilliga’s sign.
Ms Chaplain told the meeting discussions held in Pilliga had showed that the community itself was in favour of the yowie being used.
Mayor Darrell Tiemens offered his thanks to council staff for their work on the project as well as to community members for providing feedback.
“It’s been fascinating as to how people view their village or their town,” Cr Tiemens said.
“I just want to thank everyone who has put so much time and effort into this.”
Cr Jocellin Jansson expressed similar sentiment and described the community discussion about the entry signs as robust.
“It showed that people really engaged and cared,” she said.
With councillors adopting the designs, the shire can now proceed with the fabrication and installation of the new entry signs.
While discussing the topic of signs, Cr Greg Lamont queried if the signs on the shire boundaries would change.
New shire signs were installed in recent years, but older signs are still in use at several locations.
Cr Tiemens acknowledged Cr Lamont’s interest in raising the matter.
