Bush Fire Danger Period brought forward in North West

DYLAN SMITHThe Bush Fire Danger Period is in place a month earlier than usual for local government areas in northern NSW, including Narrabri and Gunnedah shires.

From 1 September, residents need to obtain a fire permit from the NSW Rural Fire Service before conducting any burns.

This includes activities such as hazard reduction burning and burning of piles, stubble or other vegetation.

“The Bush Fire Danger Period is an important part of preparing our communities for the warmer months ahead,” the RFS said when issuing a reminder about the statutory fire danger season.

“It helps ensure burning activities are conducted safely and under suitable conditions to reduce the risk of fires escaping and threatening lives, property and the environment.”

The RFS reminded residents it is a great time to do a few simple and free things with the danger period now underway.

The service particularly has encouraged people to review and discuss their bush fire survival plan with family.

Residents should also clear gutters and around homes as well as check pumps, hoses and firefighting equipment.
