Each year, Lions clubs host the Youth of the Year Quest, an opportunity for young people to step up and test their public speaking and general knowledge skills against their peers.
Each year, the organisers are impressed with the standard of the entrants and this year was no exception, said Narrabri quest coordinator Lion Rob Gilbert.
Five girls contested the regional titles held at Narrabri Golf club on Saturday.
During the afternoon they met the judges, Jim Purcell, Sophie McFarland and Anna Dugdale, and responded to a range of questions covering day to day life, their achievements, general knowledge and interests.
“The five entrants are all high achievers and again displayed a very high standard of presentation” said Mr Gilbert.
Following the day’s meeting with the judges, the girls attended a dinner function at Narrabri Golf Club where they were invited to present speeches to the audience.
Judges praised the entrants’ poise, presentation and content.
At the end of the evening, contestant Chelsea George, Gunnedah, was announced as the winner of the public speaking component of the regional quest and Elka Devney, Moree, was named as the regional winner.
Elka will now contest the District finals of the Lions Youth of the Year Quest in Tamworth in two weeks’ time.
