The construction of a new, wider bridge across the Namoi River at Tarriaro is a further sign of growth in Narrabri Shire.

The new two lane bridge now nearing completion on the Turrawan Road, will replace a single lane structure built in 1978 at a time when today’s volume of traffic was not envisaged by planners.

The development of coal mining and expansion of agriculture and industry in the area served by the Tarriaro bridge has seen daily vehicle numbers grow exponentially.

The former single lane bridge was increasingly inadequate – and dangerous. Skid marks on the approaches at each side were a testament to the potential for serious accidents as more vehicles, locals and tourist traffic, crossed.

Former Member for Barwon Kevin Humphries described the Tarriaro bridge as ‘the most dangerous in the region.’

Lobbyists, notably local resident Leonie Grumley, urged Narrabri Shire council to replace the bridge and the decision was made in September last year.

The old bridge was closed to traffic on November 25 and demolition began.

The Shire Council received $1,780,800 in funding from the NSW Government’s Restart NSW Resources for Regions fund with Council co-contributing $763,200.
