Probably only the turtles and a few other people knew, but Saturday was World Turtle Day. Coincidently, Environment Minister Matt Kean revealed there has been a hatching of 20 eggs from the endangered Manning River Turtle after eggs were rescued from the wild earlier this year. “The Manning River Turtle is the godfather of Australian short-necked turtles and estimated to be over 55 million years old,” Mr Kean said. Turtles are an important part of our ecosystems, eating among other things mosquito larvae. We have our own local turtle, of course, the Namoi River snapping turtle, also commonly known as Bell’s turtle.
