Narrabri Hazmat personnel responded to a minor incident in Maitland Street on Tuesday. A pool of several litres of oil was lying in the gutter in front of Narrabri Post office. ‘We think it was leaked sump oil,” said Narrabri NSW Fire and Rescue station commander Shane Bradford. The pool was at the end of a trail of oil down Maitland street. The Hazmat team cleaned it up with their special ‘sphagsorb’ material, a biogradable super absorbent material, made from sphagnum peat moss, which soaks up spills like oil, paint, solvents etc. Narrabri Hazmat – the hazardous materials’ unit – is called upon for jobs big and small – ranging from Tuesday’s oil spill to toxic chemical spills following vehicle accidents. Narrabri is the Hazmat HQ for a wide region and is equipped with the gear to confine and remove a range of caustic or noxious spills dangerous to people or the environment.
