Can any reader of The Courier jog my memory?
Many years ago the late Jack Davey of radio and TV fame who had a call sign ‘Hi-ho-everybody’ as a start to his shows, brought his show to Narrabri.
The bookings were so heavy the patrons could not be accommodated in the old Town Hall and it was held in The Strand Theatre.
Jack Davey at the time had around five million fans.
Jack was the voice compering all Movietone newsreels at that time.
Money raised, I am almost sure, was donated to the building fund for Narrabri Memorial Swimming Pool.
It was a great achievement for our town leaders to hold such an event at the time.
Mr Davey passed away at the height of his success to cancer.
He could have been around for many years to come but it was not to be.
His funeral was held in Sydney and around 150,000 fans lined the funeral route.
Jack Davey was a great Australian and a great entertaining personality.
However, ‘hi-ho-everybody’, it hurts me to mention, like another Australian ‘icon’ the great racehorse Phar Lap, were both born in New Zealand in the true Anzac tradition.
Does anybody know when Jack Davey came to town and what the fundraiser was for?
