Better get your expensive whisky checked. New laser technology developed in Scotland will tell you if your expensive, rare whisky is really so old and rare. The laser beam is shone though the bottle and analyses the whisky in the middle – no need to open the bottle. Last year, a Chinese billionaire paid $13,500 for one dram (as much as you can swallow in one mouthful) of an alleged rare, single malt. Later testing proved it to be fake and 100 years younger than the claimed 1878 vintage. The sellers of the whisky flew to China to give the drinker a refund, although he had not been aware it was fake. In 2018, Scottish university tests of a batch of vintage whiskies found more than a third were fake.
