Gunnedah Shire Council has selected Reginald Talbot and Doc Anderson Bridge as the preferred name for Gunnedah’s new overpass.

Mr Talbot’s daughter, Julie, said it would be a great honour for her late father. “He did a lot for the community,” Mrs Talbot said. “I know a lot of people and family are going to be very proud.”

Mr Talbot was known as an advocate for the protection of indigenous heritage, particularly in the campaign against mining in the Leard Forest near Boggabri.

“He worked with a lot of farmers and knew the country in that area,” she said.

Meanwhile, Dr Anderson’s son, Jim, who now lives in Murrurundi, said it was a well-earned acknowledgment. “He would be thrilled to be recognised, he sure deserves it,” Jim said.

Doc Anderson, as he was known, practised as a surgeon in Australia in the early 1900s before serving on the battlefield in Palestine during World War I.

He later moved to Gunnedah where it was reported he delivered 3500 babies over a 47-year period.
