Democracy Russian style: Russian president Vladimir Putin scored a comfortable win in the recent Russian elections, with his party United Russia winning more than 50 per cent of the votes. Nitpickers decrying this great political achievement point to the fact that voters stayed away from polling booths in huge numbers, Putin’s political opponents including opposition leader Alexei Navalny are gaoled, and sometimes murdered, newspapers critical of Putin have been shut down and, oh, there are suggestions of electoral fraud as well – with an estimated 50 per cent of votes being fake.
