An online fundraising appeal has been launched to support Mitch Williams following a devastating fire at his Lloyd Street unit.

Mr Williams is well known in the community for his work with young people at his former boxing gym.

He lost his entire belongings in the recent blaze and is also seeking assistance with accommodation.

His mother, Ann Williams, said Mitch was lucky to escape with his life as the fire occurred late at night and he was asleep when the fire started in the premises.

“The smoke alarm didn’t activate but fortunately two people who are absolute heroes were walking past and woke him up in time to get out,” she said.

“Mitch did suffer burns to his leg but was so lucky as by the time he was woken up, the place was engulfed by flames, only just making it to the exit door.”

Mr Williams now needs to find a new place to start afresh and will need to replace furniture, electrical items and everyday belongings which were destroyed in the fire.
