Nine Narrabri Tennis young guns will compete at the 2021 Champion of Champions events across the next two weekends as the current season nears an end.
The North West Champion of Champions seeding event will be held in Tamworth this Sunday, which will be followed by the Northern NSW Champion of Champions tournament at Inverell the following weekend.
Players qualify for those invitational events by succeeding at the round-robin tournaments across the North West during the year.
Charlotte Murphy (8-years-and-under girls), Matilda Murphy (10-years-and-under girls), Lucas Dowdell (10-years-and-under boys), Alistair Dowdell, Jack Hartnett and Callum Wales (14-years-and-under boys), Ava Garbutt and Lily Campbell (14-years-and-under girls) and George Bennett (16-years-and-under boys) have all qualified for their respective divisions.
Narrabri Tennis head coach Shane Murphy told The Courier he was thrilled to have nine representatives travelling to compete at those two events.
“It’s pretty sensational to have nine reps going over for these events,” Murphy said.
“To get in there, you have to be in the best eight in the region, so they’ve all done really well.
“The Champion of Champions is a culmination of the round-robin series throughout the year, which we’ve had good representation at.
“We’ve had a couple of unlucky players that have just missed out, but in order to get those points, you have to get a little bit more involved and play in a couple more of those tournaments.”
This Sunday’s North West event in Tamworth has been designed to be a two-titled tournament.
While the players will be competing for the respective 2021 North West championship trophies, the event will also act as a seeding event for the following weekend’s tournament.
In Inverell on Saturday and Sunday, November 20 and 21, the nine qualified Narrabri Tennis players will all compete for both individual and team success.
They will each be part of the North West squad, which will challenge a combined Lower North Coast/Upper North Coast team, and they will also compete for the Northern NSW championship titles in their respective divisions.
