A glimmer of hope is emerging from the latest variant of COVID. The Omicron variant, while seemingly more infectious, causes milder symptoms than previous variants of the virus. The Sydney Morning Herald reported that South African doctors were optimistic about Omicron causing milder symptoms. “At the moment, virtually everything points toward it being milder disease,” director of the Africa Health Research Institute, Willem Hanekom said. While the disease is reportedly milder than earlier variants, governments around the world are preparing for Omicron cases to overwhelm hospitals due to the variant’s apparently increased infectiousness.
