The Wee Waa and wider Narrabri Shire community has joined the family of the late John Hunt in mourning his passing.

Mr Hunt, 89, passed away on February 21.

He had been a resident of Whiddon Wee Waa (Weeronga) aged care facility for some time.

Mr Hunt played a significant role in the district community as a leader in local organisations and as a successful agricultural producer on the Spring Plain family property ‘North Nowley’ for many decades.

Mr Hunt was highly respected and held in great affection.

He was quietly spoken and unassuming, with a dry wit appreciated by his family and friends and his advice on a wide range of rural industry issues was valued. Among his other accomplishments, he was an acknowledged authority on wool breeding and achieved many successes, as a racehorse breeder and owner over many years, at local, regional and metropolitan race meetings.

“His heart was in the country” recalled a close family friend of many years.

“He had a love of the land.”

Mr Hunt was active in a wide range of community organisations including Wee Waa Show, for which he served as committee president, he was closely involved with the Presbyterian Church and served as president of the former Pilliga Pastures Protection Board.
