Narrabri and District Chamber of Commerce president Russell Stewart reflected on a terrific year at the organisation’s annual general meeting last week.

Mr Stewart, who was re-elected as president, spoke of chamber’s many activities throughout 2021 in his report to members.

“The chamber is growing,” he told the gathering.

“Last year our number one event was the street carnival.”

Chamber was also heavily involved in the Pink Up Namoi festivities which took place in the last few months of 2021.

Pink Up Namoi, which was spearheaded by local breast cancer survivor Karen Kirkby and auspiced by the Rotary Club of Narrabri, topped the nation in the McGrath Foundation’s Pink Up Your Town campaign.

More than $106,000 was raised at events held across the shire, with the campaign receiving backing from all town chambers.

While the chamber’s prestigious business awards gala celebration was cancelled as a result of the COVID pandemic last year, Mr Stewart was optimistic it will return this year.

Mr Stewart is also hoping to see Back to the ‘Bri make a comeback this year.

In addition to Mr Stewart’s re-election as president, previous chamber executive position holders Cheryl Pawley, Sheryl Ridley and Louise Gett were returned to the roles of deputy president, secretary and treasurer.

Committee members elected at the meeting were Gilly Goddard, Lester Kelly, Ian Duffey, Louise Stewart, Dylan Smith and Jamie Condon.

Maitland Street business owner Tony Longworth was appointed as chamber’s delegate to Narrabri Shire Council’s Crime Prevention Committee.

Mr Stewart was appointed as the delegate to the Coal Seam Gas Community Consultative Committee as well as Inland Rail.

At last week’s chamber gathering, an ordinary meeting was also held.

In attendance at the chamber meeting was Narrabri Shire Youth Council representative Tim Mirtschin.

Mr Stewart and chamber member Ian Duffey are eager to see the formation of a youth chamber in Narrabri.
