Thursday, March 17 is St Patrick’s Day. The Irish were among the first Europeans to settle in Australia and comprised a portion of the convict settlement population in the late 1700s. Many Irish immigrants came to Australia to escape famine in their homeland and about 30 per cent of Australians are believed to have some Irish ancestry today. Many people wear the colour green on St. Patrick’s Day. Another tradition is the planting of sweet peas, however, it’s often best to wait till April to sow them when soil conditions are cooler.
