While the floods in the Northern Rivers region have been catastrophic and heartbreaking for residents, the disaster has also prompted an outpouring of generosity as people rally to help those impacted.

Narrabri resident Christina Brooks is one of many locals who has kindly put up her hand to help. Raising money and organising a delivery of beds, mattresses, bedding, furniture, toys, groceries and cleaning supplies to the region.

“When I saw the devastation on TV, I just felt for all the people and wanted to do something to help,” said Christina.

“Thank you to the people of Narrabri for their generosity.

“It was all made possible with help from Jenn and John Thompson, Tamara Seckold, Jason Koch, and family and friends who collected donations.

“Real estate agent Kim Rozendaal called me and said she’d just sold a B&B and Dino Shweiki the owner had 20 bunk beds he was willing to donate and bedding, which was great but we needed to organise a truck to get them there along with a heap of furniture, toys and blankets kindly donated by the Narrabri people.

“I was so appreciative that Allan Anderson donated his truck and Gordon Roadways lent their trailer, otherwise it would not have been possible.

“And when we unloaded the truck on Saturday, it was such a relief.

“It was one thing to see the devastation on the news but it’s another to be there and to see people who have nothing left.

“There were two girls I connected with through Facebook and they’d lost everything and their children had lost all their toys, so I was able to meet them and take their children toys – it was very emotional.”

Christina’s dedication to making the donation drive happen is admirable, and with the support of family and friends she also raised $700 for flood victims at a barbecue and cake stall

“It’s definitely worth helping, I don’t know how many of them will recover.”
