A construction project to assist the Narrabri Waste Management Facility meet needs of the future is underway.

Narrabri Shire Council’s construction of a piggybank cell at the Yarrie Lake Road facility is taking shape, with council advising the project is progressing well.

The piggyback approach, which is the construction of a new landfill cell on the slope or the top of an existing one, can help to meet future needs because it minimises the impact on landfill capacity.

Works include installation of an under-liner landfill gas drainage system, construction of a geogrid-reinforced bridging layer and composite geosynthetic leachate barrier system.

Construction activities are not impacting existing operations management, with the goal to reduce costs, eliminate waste, ensure environmental, health and safety compliance while adding value to council’s operations and processes.

Narrabri Shire Council’s director infrastructure delivery Eloise Chaplain said there had been delays due to weather and supply of materials but the expected completion was now on track.

“Site preparation and earthworks have commenced, along with works for the landfill gas collection systems,” she explained.

Mrs Chaplain said council was adopting the piggyback approach to continue to meet the ongoing waste disposal needs of the shire.

“Council’s project is aimed at future planning to ensure infrastructure meets demand,” she said.

“Council’s aim is to responsibly manage waste disposal and support the transition to a circular waste economy.”
