Former Deputy Prime Minister and sixth-generation farmer from Mullaley, John Anderson AC, has been recognised with the highest appointment in the 2022 Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
Mr Anderson has been appointed as a Companion of the Order of Australia for eminent service to rural and regional development, to leadership in international agricultural research and food security, to social commentary, and through contributions to not-for-profit organisations.
He was one of only eight Australians this year recognised with the prestigious honour which acknowledges achievement and merit of the highest degree in service to Australia or to humanity at large.
A former senior Cabinet minister in the Australian Government led by John Howard (1996 to 2005), Mr Anderson was Leader of the National Party and Deputy Prime Minister for six years during his almost 20-year career in parliament.
He was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2011 for his support of rural and regional communities.
On Monday the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd) congratulated all 992 Australians recognised in Monday’s honours list.
“Recipients share some common traits – including selflessness, excellence and a commitment to service,” Mr Hurley said.
“They’re from different backgrounds, their stories are each unique, and each has served in different ways. This diversity is a strength and each has impacted their community and made it better.
“For that, we thank them and, today, we celebrate them.”
