Public and private schools teachers’ associations have directed members to strike for 24 hours today, Thursday, June 30.
Local educators will be among the striking members, with minimal supervision available at some schools.
Narrabri High School provided an update to the community and advised the campus will be non-operational.
No student supervision will be available, the update from principal Simon Warden said.
Similarly, Narrabri Public School advised only minimal supervision would be available as a result of the strike action.
NSW Teachers’ Association president Angelo Gavrielatos said today’s strike would be the first time in 26 years that educators from public and Catholic schools took action on the same day.
“It reflects the deep concern of the profession across NSW about the teacher shortages and the lack of an urgent plan to fix them. Children do not have the option of putting their education on hold and waiting until the situation implodes,” Mr Gavrielatos said.
“Every child has the right to be taught every day by a fully qualified teacher.
“The major problem is that teaching has become a less attractive profession. More people are leaving the profession and less are studying to become a teacher.
“Workloads are excessive, with NSW teachers working, on average, 60 hours a week.”
Education Minister Sarah Mitchell has expressed her disappointment with the action. Ms Mitchell told media the state government had made a reasonable offer to increase teachers’ wages.
