The Namoi Dragons have an action-packed weekend of dragon boating planned, with training to be held in the Narrabri Creek.
Members of the public are invited to come along and try the sport at the Cameron Park boat ramp on Sunday.
On Saturday, visiting coaches are conducting training for clubs.
This weekend’s sessions come as the Namoi Dragons celebrate their official affiliation with Dragon Boats NSW.
Memberships to the local club are also now available.
Sunday’s paddling session starts at 8.30am.
The Lions Club of Narrabri will be on hand to cook up a delicious barbecue.
In addition to this weekend’s sessions, western regional officer Pearl Butcher, of Orange, has offered to assist the local Dragons with training school students in Narrabri once a week.
Dragon boating is about fun, fitness and friendship with the aim to enjoy the sport of dragon boating, while encouraging and assisting participants to achieve their individual goals of fitness and competition.
In Narrabri, the local enthusiasts see a future with the opportunity for sporting clubs, other organisations and individuals to join for fun and fitness, and with the likelihood of a competitive crew to take the challenge up to other dragon boat clubs – of which there are many in Australia.
When the idea of a local dragon boat club was floated the community response was prompt and enthusiastic.
The Namoi Dragons have received sponsorship from Santos, Whitehaven, the Narrabri RSL Sporting Body and Logan & Co.
Thanks to this support, the club has been able to acquire equipment and conduct training.
Recently, the club was able to obtain a second trailer for its boat.
The local Dragons have also been supported by neighbouring dragon boating clubs to develop and grow the sport in Narrabri.
