Wee Waa Golf Club hosted the first round of its 2022 club championships on Sunday, and it was the defending champion and club co-captain David Avery who finished the day leading the way in A-grade.
Avery was one of 21 golfers who lined up on the day across the three grades and was one of seven in the A-grade field.
His search for a fourth consecutive crown got off to a flying start when he teed off from the 12th hole at 10am and shot a 74 across the first 18 holes before shooting a 37 across the next nine to finish the day with a three-over-par 27-hole score of 111.
The 2019, 2020 and 2021 champion now holds a seven-shot lead over Ben Russell, who is second on the A-grade leader board on 118 after shooting a 79 across his first 18 holes and then 39 across the next nine holes.
Last year’s club champs runner-up and Avery’s current co-captain, Ty Baker, finished round one in third place on 120 after he shot a 77 across his first 18 holes and then 43 across his next nine.
Shannon Bartz (121), Scott Smith (123), Jeremy Thorne (124) and Tom Avery (127) are then ranked fourth to seventh, respectively.
The B-grade leaders after 27 holes are Chris Hartnett and Kevin Baker, who both shot 128 on Sunday.
Hartnett led the way after 18 holes on 84, two shots clear of Baker who scored 86 across his first 18. However, Baker then shot a 42 to Hartnett’s 44 across the next nine and they finished the day on a tied score.
They are both only two shots clear of the third-placed Angus Galagher, who ended the day on 130.
Galagher shot 85 across his first 18 holes and then 45 across his next nine.
David Cruickshank (132), John Galagher (133), Max Smith (134), Will Baker (134), Les Ross (136), Mark Hennessy (138) and David Russell (138) are the other local golfers who lined up in B-grade.
The remaining four competitors who played on Sunday were Robert Downey, David Crutcher, Ron Henry and Owen Williams.
Williams and Downey lead the way with 154 after 27 holes, followed by Crutcher (165) and Henry (166).
The second round of 27 holes will be contested this Sunday, August 21, at Wee Waa Golf Club from 10am.
The 2022 event will be 75 per cent completed after Sunday’s action, and the final 18 holes will then be played on Sunday, August 28.
The action won’t stop there for the local club however, as it prepares to host the Wee Waa Westpac Rescue Volunteer Support Group charity day the following weekend.
