Desalination plants, which turn sea water into fresh water, were all the rage in many countries including Australia in the sustained dry periods some years ago. Australia still has some in mothballs awaiting the moment when the big dry returns and some like Perth’s are busy all year. But desalination is a vital daily fact of life in the United Arab Emirates where de-salination produces a whopping 14 per cent of all the world’s de-salinated water.
