Consistency has been key for Wee Waa Golf Club’s 2022 club championships leader David Avery as he prepares to go into this Sunday’s third and final day with an eight-shot lead.
The three-time defending champion has now shot a two-over-par 74 across all three rounds of 18 holes that he has played during the first two days of the event to finish the second day on a six-over-par score of 222.
Just as they did on day one a week earlier on Sunday, August 14, the Wee Waa golfers played 27 more holes on Sunday. So, the 72-hole event is now three-quarters complete, with just 18 more holes to play this Sunday before the champion is crowned.
Last year’s runner-up Ty Baker is eight shots back from Avery on 230 after he shot a one-over-par 73 in his third round of 18 holes on Sunday.
Avery went into the second day of the club championships event with a nine-shot lead over Baker, but both men shot 37 during their first nine holes before Baker reduced his deficit by one shot at the completion of the next 18.
Ben Russell entered the second day in second place on 118 as he trailed Avery by seven shots. However, a 39 during his first nine holes and then a 79 across his next 18 saw him fall 14 shots from the lead and finish the day ranked fourth on the leaderboard.
Scott Smith is now third after he shot a 38 across his first nine holes and a 73 across the next 18. Smith is four shots back from Baker on 234.
Ranked in fifth to seventh place on the A-grade leaderboard are Jeremy Thorne (240), Shannon Bartz (242) and Tom Avery (249).
Meanwhile, Kevin Baker is now the outright leader in B-grade. Baker went into day two locked on 128 with Chris Hartnett and then outscored him by six shots.
Baker shot a 41 across his first nine holes and then an 85 across his next 18 to finish the day on 254. While he moved six shots clear of Hartnett, his advantage over Angus Galagher was reduced from two shots to one.
Galagher entered day two ranked third on the B-grade leaderboard and shot a 40 across the first nine holes. That was a division-best score, and it saw him rise into second place.
Like Baker, Galagher shot an 85 across the third round of 18 holes and that meant that Baker held onto his one-shot lead over Galagher going into the final day.
The big mover in B-grade on day two was Will Baker, who has shot up the leaderboard from seventh to fourth.
Baker shot a 44 across the first nine holes on Sunday and then boasted a division-best score of 83 across the next 18. That saw him finish the day on 261, just seven shots back from Kevin Baker.
Ranked fifth to ninth on the B-grade leaderboard, respectively, are David Cruickshank (268), Max Smith (272), David Russell (274), Mark Hennessy (275) and John Galagher (278).
On top of the C-grade leaderboard is Owen Williams. He now leads by five shots after he went into the day tied with Rob Downey on 154.
Those two men both scored 104 across their final 18 holes on Sunday, but Williams had outscored Downey 52 shots to 57 across their first nine of the day.
Ron Henry jumped from fourth to third on the C-grade leaderboard after he had a brilliant day on the course.
He went into the day 12 shots behind Williams but reduced that to seven after shooting a 54 across the first nine holes and then a 97 across the next 18.
He is now on 317, and sitting back in fourth is David Crutcher on 329.
The third and final round of Wee Waa Golf Club’s 2022 club championships event will get underway this Sunday, August 28, at 12.30pm.
