Sounds like fun times ahead for soccer fans in Qatar for the FIFA World Cup. Accommodation can be obtained for $400 a night in ‘shipping container-style’ rooms. Alcohol can’t be brought into the country and will be confiscated at the airport, and booze will be restricted to guests at luxury hotels – or they can pay a mind-boggling $140 for a pint of beer from licensed vendors. Quite right, too. The Qatar authorities are dissuading footy fans from drinking while the government concentrates on the important issues like human rights, repression of the gay community, with attendant gaol or death penalties, and the oppression of migrant workers, which has seen a reported 6000 deaths of people working on the construction of World Cup facilities.
