The Governor-General of Australia has visited Moree to thank the emergency services involved in the recent major flood response as well as meeting civic leaders and community members regarding the flood’s impact and subsequent recovery.

David Hurley was joined by his wife Linda for the community visit last week.

The Governor-General and his wife viewed a short film compiled by Sacha Estens, of Rabbit Hop Films, detailing the major flood event.

Following this, they met with students and teachers at Moree East Public School and St Philomena’s Catholic School.

Mr and Mrs Hurley gathered in the Moree Plains Shire Council chambers to meet residents, business owners and representatives of emergency services personnel involved in the flood response.

In an online statement, the Governor-General’s office said the people of Moree, like so many across Australia, have been challenged by recent floods.

“The gritty determination, compassion and kindness in the community is obvious – people helping loved ones, neighbours and strangers alike in their hour of need and afterwards,” the Governor-General’s office said.
