Fun facts about one of TV’s most popular cartoons The Simpsons you may not have heard of. Creator of the show Matt Groening, created the show and the characters, naming them after members of his own family. The Simpsons family is made up of five characters – Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie. The Simpsons first aired on December 17, 1989 and has been running for longer than any other scripted prime-time TV series. Bart’s full name is Bartholomew Jojo Simpson, but is more commonly known as Bart, an anagram of the word ‘brat’. The Simpsons were created to have yellow skin in a bid to attract attention and make people stop and watch while flicking through the 1980s TV channels. The famous ‘D’oh’ was written in the scripts as an “annoyed grunt”. The Oxford Dictionary decided the word ‘d’oh’ should be added, and it was entered the most popular dictionary in 2001. The single ‘Do the Bartman’ was co-written by Michael Jackson, although he received no credit for it. This was his own request and he was listed as John Jay Smith instead. In 2009, Marge Simpson was featured on the cover of Playboy magazine.
